Wood Finishes
When the sanding is complete, we stain and finish the wood floors.
The first coat is the stain which will determine the final color of your floors. A & R Wood Floors uses oil based stains made by Dura-Seal that are formulated specifically for the wood flooring industry. If one of the stock colors doesn’t meet your specific decorating needs, we will mix custom colors on site to satisfy your expectation.
The stain is then protected with two coats of polyurethane. A & R Wood Floors uses oil based polyurethane as a standard finish. This polyurethane has been the industry standard finish for over 50 years and is very durable. It is a thick finish with exceptional looks and characteristics. It takes 12 – 16 hours to dry to the touch and has a considerably harsh odor as it is drying.
A & R Wood Floors also has a couple of water based polyurethanes available that are manufactured by the Bona Corporation;
The standard residential finish is two coats of MEGA which has an equivalent durability as the oil base polyurethane, dries to the touch in 3 – 4 hours, and doesn’t have the offensive odors that are often associated with the oil base finishes. The MEGA finish will add a moderate upcharge to the cost of the floors.
The commercial finish TRAFFIC may be desired if you have large pets or you know that you are constantly rough on your floors. TRAFFIC is one of the best finishes available; it has much of the same characteristics of the MEGA, but is much more durable. The downside to TRAFFIC is it’s costly.
Regardless of the finish, it takes a full 7 days to be fully cured. Therefore, A & R Wood Floors recommends a wait of 48 hours before moving furniture back in and a full seven days before placing rugs on the new floor. Choosing to move furniture and rugs sooner will mar the new finish. Give it time – you’ll be happy you did.
